Dog contracts monkeypox. The first case of human-to-dog monkeypox has been confirmed in France. The dog was infected after contact with its owner who had skin lesions. This transfer from humans back to animals is a problem since it can end up in wildlife populations and create a massive outbreak. Researchers believe it may be transferred to other pets including cats. If you are experiencing monkeypox symptoms it’s recommended to avoid direct contact with your pet.
Training team charged after viral video. The mother-daughter duo of Cypress Arrow Kennel & K9 Academy in Louisiana has been arrested after being accused of animal abuse. A video that spread across social media shows the women yanking a Cane Corso named Fenixx in opposite directions by his collar as well as hitting him repeatedly with a quirt. Additional videos of the women slamming dogs on the floor have circulated as well. They have been charged with 2 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and released on $10,000 bail.
Missing dog found in cave. After being gone since June, poodle-mix Abby has been reunited with her family! A family exploring a Missouri cave discovered the 13-year-old dog who had lost half her body weight and appeared to have given up. One of the explorers who was experienced in cave rescues worked tirelessly to get Abby to safety carrying her in a duffle bag and maneuvering the narrow entrance. Since her rescue, she has regained the weight and is once again her happy self!
Dogs cry tears of joy for their family. A new study in Japan indicates that dogs actually “cry” happy tears when their owners return. The test found that dogs produced 10% more tears when their owner returned after a few hours. The same results did not occur when familiar non-owners returned to the dog. Scientists have also found a connection between the tears and “love hormone” oxytocin which may reinforce our belief that dogs that true love for their humans.
Tucson boarding kennel shut down for neglect. Buhrke’s Pet Resort has been shut down after the death of a dog in July. Authorities received 3 animal welfare complaints prior to the dog’s death and inspections found dogs covered in feces, overheating, and with no water in near 100-degree temperatures. Citations were given each time but nothing else was done for many weeks. The city has now revoked its business license and the bank is selling the facility. The owner, his stepson, and his stepdaughter are all facing animal neglect charges.
Mystery virus killing Michigan dogs. A parvo-like virus that has killed dozens of dogs across multiple counties is baffling vets. While some of the dogs tested positive for parvo, most are testing negative which is making a diagnosis difficult. Pet parents are advised to avoid dog parks and popular dog-friendly areas for the time being. If your dog exhibits parvo-like symptoms seek immediate vet care.
Flesh-eating mold shuts down dog park. A Tallahassee dog park has been temporarily closed after a dog contracted pythiosis. The toxic mold is found in stagnant water and typically affects the skin and intestinal tract. The most common treatment is removing the infected area including amputation of limbs if needed. Dog owners are advised to keep their pets away from standing water to best avoid the toxin.
