Avian flu is back on the rise. Earlier this year 43 million chickens and turkeys were lost in the US to bird flu. Unfortunately, an increase in cases has led to the euthanization of over 3 million egg-laying chickens in Ohio. Poultry prices had been decreasing since the beginning of the year but customers should expect an increase in price as well as a shortage of chicken and eggs in the coming months.

Dogfighting ring shut down. A South Carolina bust has shut down a dogfighting ring resulting in the rescue of 305 dogs. A team of over 60 law enforcement officers executed 23 search warrants and interrupted an event in Richland county. More than 20 people have been arrested on charges of animal cruelty and dog fighting. The local humane society is treating and sheltering the dogs.

Almost 40 animals improperly euthanized. A Texas animal shelter is under investigation after it was discovered that 38 cats and dogs were put down without following protocol. Employees claimed the animals were ill or aggressive and decided the next step was euthanasia violating standard procedure. Animals are supposed to have an evaluation from a veterinarian or behaviorist before that decision is made. 5 employees have been fired. The shelter manager resigned before they could be terminated.

Hunter under investigation for killing dog. *Warning* If you Google this story you may see very graphic images. A Montana woman is under investigation after mistaking a husky puppy for a young wolf. The woman posted pictures of herself with the dog’s remains on social media claiming she killed a wolf pup while hunting a bear. Commenters identified the animal as a dog, one of roughly 12 huskies abandoned in the area. This prompted the sheriff’s office to start an investigation into the shooting and if the woman was even licensed to hunt wolves. The abandonment of the dogs is also under investigation.

Donated fur helping with oil spills. We know how annoying shedding can be but did you know that it can help the planet? The Hairmat, created by Matter of Trust, is a felted mat made from donated fur and hair. It’s used to absorb oil and clean up spills more effectively. Partners of the program are located around the world and putting their skills to use. You can even donate your own hair or fur at one of their various donation hubs. Large donators include alpaca farms and husky rescues!

Stolen service dog reunited with owner. Daisy, a bull terrier who was stolen 3 weeks ago in Phoenix, has been returned! After seeing a so cial media post about a found dog Daisy’s owner Anthony got into contact with the poster, who claimed they gave the dog to a coworker. After that, they stopped responding so he enlisted the help of the police. Finally, the two were reunited after confirming her identity with a microchip. Daisy, who had a rash and appears to have been partially dyed black in an effort to disguise her, is doing well at home!
