4000 beagles to be rescued in Virginia. A recent judge’s ruling will shut down the Envigo breeding facility in Cumberland, Virginia . All of the dogs at the research center will be sent to various humane societies across the country, starting with pregnant and nursing dogs. After 9 months of inspections over 70 animal welfare violations were discovered in addition to over 300 deaths in a 7-month period. As of June 446 beagles have already been removed.

Rescue dog wins. A Chinese crested and chihuahua mix was recently given the honor of holding the “world’s ugliest dog” title. Mr. Happy Face is a senior dog rescued from Arizona. Estimated to have only a month or so to live due to his age and health his new owner adopted h His owner uses him as an example to others to adopt senior and special needs dogs.

Settlement reached in Zignature lawsuit. Since 2021 Zignature Pet Food has been in an ongoing legal battle over claims of dishonest labeling. The claims state that food labeled as “grain-free” did in fact include grains and “chicken-free” foods contained chicken. Customers will receive small monetary compensation while the company is agreeing to adhere to FDA guidelines, which they should have already.

Canine credited in drug lord's arrest. A bloodhound named Max played a key role in the recent capture of fugitive Rafael Caro Quintero. After following the scent, he discovered Quintero hiding in some bushes in Sinaloa Mexico. Quintero, who was wanted for the 1985 murder of a DEA agent, has been on the run since 2013.

Dog treats recalled over salmonella. Several products are being recalled after a sample recently tested positive. These chicken jerky treats are under the brands Beg & Barker, Billo’s Best Friend, and Green Coast Pets. No illnesses have been reported. While dogs are unlikely to be affected by the bacteria humans may become ill if exposed. Safe food handling practices are encouraged whenever you deal with dog food or treats.

Mars becomes bigger than Coca-Cola with expanding pet monopoly. Despite competitors seeing losses, Mars has seen massive growth mostly due to their presence in the pet industry. Pet ownership has increased over the last 2 years in addition to pet food purchases. Not only does Mars own pet foods like IAMS, Pedigree, and Royal Canin they also own multiple chains of vet clinics including Blue Pearl, VCA Animal Hospitals, and Linnaeus Group. They are financially benefiting twice from selling low-quality food.

Researchers one step closer to pinpointing canine history. A recent study looked at 72 ancient wolf genomes from the last 100,00 years and found that they were more highly connected to each other than present-day wolves. Research also shows that present-day dogs, in general, are more closely related to ancient wolves of eastern Eurasia, although in Africa they tend to be closer to ancient southwest Eurasian wolves. This brings us one step closer to finding the exact population our modern dogs descend from.
