Flea collar debate reaches lawmakers. The ongoing debate over the safety of Seresto flea and tick collars is front and center in a House Congressional hearing. While the company still insists the collars are safe documents show over 100,000 complaints have been filed with the EPA. This hearing should help the EPAโ€™s Office of the Inspector General decide whether or not these collars should continue to be sold and considered safe. It will also decide whether or not the company followed the legal requirements to get approval.

Viral video dog reunited with owner. Last week videos circulated on the internet of a dog at the San Diego Zoo. The dog, later identified as Meatball, was seen roaming around the gorilla enclosure even drawing the attention of the gorilla. Fortunately, he was safely removed. After spending several days with the San Diego Humane Society where he was vaccinated, neutered, and had ticks removed he was reunited with his owner.

Kiddie pools can be hazardous for dogs. A Canadian pet parent is sharing her story after her 18-month-old puppy passed away from water intoxication. The pup splashed around in about 4 inches of water for roughly half an hour and within an hour of that, he was gone. The pup's vet determined he was affected by water poisoning (also known as hyperhydration or water toxemia) which occurs after a large amount of water is consumed, overwhelming the body. Vets suggest you always supervise your dog in the water and ensure they do not ingest too much. Symptoms include lethargy, bloating, vomiting, and drooling.

Freshpet issues a voluntary recall. A recent lot of Freshpet Fresh from the Kitchen chicken recipe was found to be contaminated with salmonella. The lot was set to be destroyed but a small amount was shipped out to retailers. Affected bags were sent to Walmarts in Alabama and Georgia. Select Targets may also be carrying contaminated bags. (See full state list here.) While healthy dogs are able to process bacteria such as salmonella, it can more easily affect humans. Be sure to always follow proper food handling protocols whether you feed kibble, cooked, or raw food.

Missouri dog is an accidental arsonist. A curious pup is seen on an in-home camera investigating leftovers in a pan on the stovetop. After accidentally turning on the stove with touch controls a fire was ignited in the kitchen. Two dogs were rescued from the home and fire authorities were able to extinguish the flames. Luckily, no one was injured in the blaze. As technology improves and our appliances become more high-tech homeowners should always implement safety features to prevent similar accidents.

Rhode Island dogs are saving the turtles. Specially trained dogs are using their sniffers to track the movements and population of local turtles. The 6-week study will help decide whether or not dogs can successfully find the turtles and if they are more efficient than a team of humans. The dogs being trialed have already proven themselves after 2 weeks and are happy to work in environments that are difficult for humans to navigate. The hope is that these dogs will contribute to the conservation of dwindling turtle populations.

Veterinarians discourage breeding and buying bulldogs. The Royal Veterinary College is coming together to warn of the dire situation of English bulldogs, known for their flat faces, barrel shape, and heavy breathing. While these features may be cute to us they are detrimental to the animal's health and the RVCโ€™s study finds they are twice as likely as other breeds to develop health issues. Potential owners are encouraged to seek out dogs from reputable breeders that are actively working to reverse the extreme features.
