AI may detect bacterial disease early. Leptospirosis, a bacteria found in animal urine, can be transferred to humans and dogs and may be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle weakness. UC Davis has created an AI system to analyze bloodwork and detect the disease earlier than previously able. This is great news for outdoor-loving pups and parents that are more likely to come into contact with it.

Early detection of canine cognitive decline may benefit humans. NC State is putting together a series of tests to detect canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CCDS) in the early stages. The neurological disease, similar to human Alzheimers, is hard to diagnose early which makes it hard to study. A combination of blood tests, cognitive tests, and an owner questionnaire appears to be promising. Researchers hope the early diagnosis will allow them to learn more about cause and prevention and transfer that to human research.

World’s oldest dog thrives on a high protein diet. Pebbles, a toy fox terrier , is the newest record holder as the world’s oldest dog. At 22 years old she has been on a cat food diet (due to it being higher protein/lower carb than dog food) for the last 10 years. While cat food isn’t generally recommended, it is designed with carnivores in mind (which dogs are!) and is a better option than high-carb dog kibble. An even better option is feeding a fresh, high-protein diet!

Russian military k9 changes sides. After being abandoned and left to starve by Russian forces in Ukraine, Belgian Malinois Max has been taken in by the Ukrainian military. The “lovely dog” is learning Ukrainian words and how to sniff out bombs to assist at checkpoints. Nobody is entirely sure why he was left on his own but he has happily joined the side of Ukraine and is living happily with his new trainer.

Canine sleep quality is related to attachment. A new study in Hungary is examining how human/dog attachment affects sleep. Researchers put humans and their dogs in a new environment and studied the dog's sleep patterns. Dogs with a high attachment to their owner were more comfortable and spent more time in a deep relaxing sleep. The assumption is that our dogs feel more safe and secure with us around, even in a new place.

Parvovirus on the rise in San Antonio. Vets are warning pet owners about a rise in the potentially deadly virus. Parvo is highly contagious and can be contracted from an infected dog or an object that has made contact with the virus. While it mostly affects puppies, adult dogs are susceptible as well. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. If your dog is exhibiting these symptoms, especially after being in a place with high dog traffic, seek veterinary care.

Hero dog saves woman with dementia. While on a walk with her dog Max, Sherry Noppe , who has early-onset dementia wandered into the forest becoming lost. The duo was lost for 3 days with Max remaining by his owner's side the entire time. As rescue teams got closer, the normally quiet dog frantically barked and growled to alert them. Sherry was disoriented and mildly dehydrated but she and Max are expected to make a full recovery.
