Pugs are so unhealthy they aren’t “typical dogs.” A new study suggests that pugs are significantly worse off than other breeds when it comes to health. The traits humans love (flat face, large eyes, corkscrew tail) contribute to multiple health issues including overheating, chronic infections, spinal problems, and obesity. Even their trademark smile is a result of mouth breathing due to their facial structure. Unless breeders actively work to improve these issues the breed may soon meet a tragic end.
Texas Great Dane named the world's tallest dog. Zeus, a gentle giant, who is not part horse, is the newest animal addition to the Guinness book of world records! Standing at 3ft 5.18 inches tall this local celebrity picks up the title of tallest living dog from previous record-holder Freddy (also a great dane) who passed away last year. Zeus uses the kitchen sink as his water bowl, does not have a saddle, and is best friends with his teenage human “brother”.
Thousands of dogs possibly sick from flea collars. Over 86,000 reports (roughly 10,0 00 more since the March 2021 recall) have been filed with the EPA over Seresto flea & tick collars, yet the product is still on the shelves and regarded as safe. Unfortunately, the majority of risk assessment info provided to the EPA comes directly from the industry and is funded by them which creates questions on bias and accuracy. While serious infestation may require pharmaceutical intervention there are many natural preventatives to consider as well.
Living with dogs creates a healthy gut. A recent study indicates that children that grow up with dogs (particularly from age 5-15) are less likely to develop Crohn’s disease. Having one or more dogs in the household led to a healthier and more diverse gut microbiome. Interestingly, cat owners do not have the same protection. Scientists are unsure exactly why but theorize that dog owners tend to be more active outside which is also connected with not developing Crohn’
Glamour shots help fight against “black dog syndrome”. Kentucky-based Maggie Epling has combined her love of animals and photography to help needy pets get adopted. After finding out that black cats and dogs are often the hardest to get adopted she began volunteering at her local shelter . Epling takes beautiful photos that showcase each pet’s unique personality and adoption applications have significantly increased. Superstition is believed to be a major factor in the difficulty for black cats and dogs getting adopted in addition to the difficulty of taking clear, accurate photos.
Virus sniffing dogs protecting potatoes. “Nose Knows Scouting” from Wyoming has a crew of five dogs specially trained to sniff out Potato Virus Y. This virus can wipe out entire crops and devastate farmers. These super sniffers are helping North Dakota State University and its potato seed breeding program to prevent the virus spread. One dog is able to search their entire stock in half a day increasing productivity and saving man-hours that are better used for research.
Man's best friend until the end. 6 days after becoming lost while hiking in Arizona's Mingus Mountains, a dog has been rescued after he refused to leave his owner’s side . Ranger, a labrador mix, is safe although suffering from dehydration and exhaustion. After becoming lost and calling for help, Ranger’s owner continued to try and find his way out. Sadly, the 74 year old man succumbed to the elements before help arrived. Funds are being raised for Ranger’s medical bills.
