Vets issue annual blue-green algae warnings. As the weather warms up the presence of toxic algae blooms is also on the rise. Dogs that ingest the algae can die within hours and there isn’t an antidote. It’s recommended to seek immediate vet care if you think your dog may have ingested it. Dogs can be exposed by drinking, swimming in, or even licking something that has come in contact with algae. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and seizures.

FDA issues warning to treat manufacturer. A warning letter to treat maker Pet Center Inc. has been mad e public and brings light to many health violations. California bill designed to protect pets. Dog training as a whole is an unregulated industry with no licensing or certification requirements. Family accidentally rescues coyote. A well-meaning family in Cape Cod saved what they believed to be a puppy that was lost near a busy road. After bringing him home they soon realized the pup was actually a wild coyote! The pup is now resting at the Cape Wildlife Center where it will be raised with a foster sibling before they are both released back to the wild.

Blood test may detect cancer in dogs. A new test from OncoK9 has b een shown to be effective in identifying the presence of cancer in a dog with a simple yes or no answer. It appears late-stage and aggressive forms are the easiest to detect but it is promising in identifying cancer before symptoms arise. The question is whether or not owners want to know if there may be no way to treat the disease. Many pet parents would prefer to have the diagnosis in order to provide palliative care for their dog.

Dog “suicide bridge” may have a scientific explanation. The Overtoun Bridge in Scotland ha s been the site of over 50 deaths (and roughly 600 jumps) from dogs throwing themselves over the side, some even returning to jump a second time. While paranormal rumors have run rampant scientists now believe their is a simple explanation: the scent of minks and dogs not realizing there is a 50-foot drop.

“Missing link” herding dog thrives in South America. Genetic testing shows the shaggy Patagonian sheepdog is the closest living relative to the original sheepdog in the UK. These dogs are isolated from outside breeding and still share a lot of their genetics with their ancestors. Studying these dogs may give us insight into how our modern herding breeds were developed and how they evolved with humans.
