Push to end testing on dogs in Michigan. Wayne State University School of Medicine is under fire after 31 years of heart failure experiments on dogs. After the implantation of a medical device that increases heart rate, the dogs are run on a treadmill until their heart gives out or the device malfunctions. Roughly $15 million dollars have funded this research with no improvements to show for it . Opponents ask that funding moves to human-centric experiments with actual benefits.

Pet owners not correctly handling food. A new study suggests that only one-third of pet parents are washing their hands after feeding their dogs. Proper food handling is important no matter what you feed, especially because the majority of food-borne pathogen contaminations like e. Coli and salmonella are found in kibble. While our dogs are designed to handle bacteria, washing your hands, your dog’s bowls, and the food prep area is a good habit to be in to prevent any potential illness in your family.

Excess copper in food could be related to illness. Veterinary scientists are questioning if a maximum limit of copper should be set for dog foods and if it’s connected to a rise in liver disease. AAFCO creates minimum requirements for vitamins and minerals but does not set safe upper limits. Many companies add excess to ensure the minimums are met which can have negative effects on copper-sensitive dogs. This is another example of how “AAFCO approved” does not mean a healthy food.

Bacteria is a part of life! Even though we know we should practice safe food handling it’s important to remember that dogs are designed to handle bacteria . Raw feeding is no more harmful than feeding kibble!
