Real Food for Dogs Is Finally Going Mainstream

A new Dog Food Advisor survey found that 1 in 2 dog parents are making homemade meals for their pups and many say they’d rather skip dinner themselves than feed their dog junk food! Nearly 10,000 U.S. dog owners shared that they’re reading labels more closely, choosing American-sourced ingredients, and even going into debt for vet care if needed. The survey also revealed that 94% believe a better diet means a longer life for their dogs. The movement toward real, fresh food is clearly growing and it’s exciting to see more people recognizing the difference it makes in their dogs’ health and longevity!

Jimmy Fallon Mourns His Beloved Dog

Jimmy Fallon shared an emotional tribute to his golden retriever, Gary, who passed away at 13½. Fallon described her as “our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a comedian, a party girl, and a rebel,” adding that “the quiet is so loud” without her. Gary first appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2012 and became a fan favorite again during the pandemic when Fallon filmed The Tonight Show from home — even “interviewing” her in one segment. Fallon’s touching goodbye reminds all pet parents just how deep the bond runs between us and our dogs.

Fresh Food Boosts Metabolism in Senior Dogs

A year-long study in senior dogs compared a fresh, human-grade diet to standard kibble. Dogs on the fresh diet showed increased breakdown of amino acids and fats for energy, higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA), and lower levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are linked to inflammation and aging. Key antioxidant compounds like carnosine, anserine, and ergothioneine were also higher. Most changes occurred within the first month and were sustained over the year, suggesting that a lower-carb, minimally processed diet can meaningfully improve metabolic health and support healthy aging in senior dogs.

High-Carb Kibble May Pose Health Risks

A University of Helsinki study found that dogs fed high-carbohydrate kibble experienced higher blood sugar, elevated blood lipids, and weight gain, while dogs on a raw meat diet showed lower blood sugar and lipids, improved insulin sensitivity, and greater fat-burning, indicated by higher ketone levels. Conducted over 4.5 months with 46 Staffordshire Bull Terriers, the research suggests that diet plays a major role in metabolic health and that dogs could serve as models for studying diet-related effects across species. The findings also highlight the growing importance of high-quality, species-appropriate pet nutrition as more brands develop diets and supplements aimed at supporting overall canine health and longevity.

NYC’s Halloween Dog Parade Brings Costumed Pups and Community Joy

Hundreds of dogs and thousands of spectators filled Manhattan’s streets for the 35th annual Halloween Dog Parade, a playful East Village tradition celebrating creativity, canine companionship, and community spirit. Pups donned elaborate costumes—from pilots and Barbie dolls to Guns N’ Roses rock stars—while rescued shelter dogs were honored as grand marshals, highlighting adoption awareness. Beyond the spectacle, the parade fosters social connection, breaking barriers between dog owners and the broader community, and this year’s costume contest crowned a trio dressed as “cereal killers” with a year’s supply of dog food.

Study Reveals Dog Breeds at Higher Risk for Rare Adrenal Tumor

A new study from the Royal Veterinary College highlights breed and demographic risks for canine phaeochromocytoma, a rare adrenal tumor. Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers, German Pointers, and Miniature Schnauzers, as well as neutered males aged 9–15, are most at risk. Often underdiagnosed due to subtle symptoms like irregular heart rate and hypertension, the tumor occurs 25 times more frequently in dogs than humans, making dogs valuable models for studying the disease and helping veterinarians detect and manage it earlier.

Ridglan Farms to End Beagle Breeding for Research by 2026

After nearly 60 years of breeding beagles for scientific research, Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin has agreed to close its breeding operations by July 1, 2026. The decision follows pressure from the animal rights group Dane4Dogs, which raised concerns about surgeries performed on dogs without anesthesia. The farm will continue selling its remaining 3,000 beagles to existing customers until next summer, with any leftover dogs being rehomed or adopted. Authorities noted that the voluntary closure achieved more for animal welfare than pursuing criminal charges.
