New Bill Aims to Make Pet Care Tax-Deductible.

The PAW Act, a new bipartisan bill, aims to make veterinary care more affordable by allowing pet care expenses to be covered under Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). Pet owners could use up to $1,000 for vet bills or pet insurance premiums. The bill also includes unlimited care for service animals. If passed, it could ease the financial burden of pet care for families and veterans.

Brazilian Dog Becomes Footvolley Star in Rio.

Floki, a 3-year-old border collie, is stunning beachgoers in Rio de Janeiro with his incredible footvolley abilities. Combining the agility of soccer and beach volleyball, Floki leaps and strikes the ball like a pro, often outperforming even seasoned players. Coached by his owner Gustavo Rodrigues, the high-energy pup has amassed a huge online following and secured brand endorsements, making him Brazil’s newest social media sensation.

Loyal Dog, Maya, Shields Disabled Owner.

An 8-year-old Pitbull mix named Maya is being hailed as a hero after she was found unconscious, lying on top of her disabled owner, Melissa, during a house fire in Citrus Heights, California. Firefighters believe Maya’s protective instinct saved Melissa's life by shielding her from the flames. Melissa, who is wheelchair-bound, sustained severe burns and is recovering, while Maya is being treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

Missing Puppy Records Spark Concern in California

California is under fire for discarding thousands of puppy import records, meant to track the health and origins of dogs entering the state for sale. Although the law requires these records to be sent to local counties, most counties don't receive them, allowing unscrupulous breeders and middlemen to evade oversight. The destruction of records also complicates efforts to track disease outbreaks and investigate unethical practices in the dog trade.

Malawi's Dogs Face Deadly Aflatoxin Crisis.

Malawi is grappling with a crisis as contaminated maize husks have led to the deaths of 450 dogs in Blantyre. The aflatoxins in the husks, produced by mold, cause severe liver damage and other health issues in dogs. The poisoning, linked to the maize-based porridge nsima, has resulted in symptoms like jaundice, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. As no specific cure exists for aflatoxin poisoning, Malawian officials are recommending that dog owners switch to rice and other safe foods until the problem is controlled.

Dogs Aid in Rewilding British Woodland.

In Lewes, England, dogs are teaming up to restore biodiversity in the Railway Land urban nature reserve. Equipped with backpacks filled with native wildflower and grass seeds, these canine volunteers drop seeds as they walk, mimicking the natural seed-dispersal behavior of wolves . The innovative project, inspired by similar efforts in Chile, aims to rejuvenate the reserve's plant life and could show significant results in a few years.

Mystery Man Drops Harmful Foods at Dogtopia.

Pasadena is on high alert after someone was caught on camera leaving toxic foods like grapes and chocolate outside Dogtopia dog daycare. This dangerous act, targeting the area for months, has alarmed both locals and animal care experts. Authorities, including Supervisor Kathryn Barger, are calling on the community to help identify the individual, as these substances can be lethal to dogs and result in costly vet bills.
