Issue 141

Did you know?
Dogs are facultative carnivores, thriving on a meat-based diet but able to digest some plant materials. While kibble producers might push carbs, your dog’s digestive system is still built for a diet that’s 85-90% meat, just like their wolf ancestors!
Keep your pup thriving, not just surviving—focus on a natural diet rich in quality proteins and fats, with only small amounts of vegetation for fiber.

Holistic Therapies for Dogs on the Rise.
Experts note a growing trend of integrating holistic therapies with or in place of conventional Western medicine, aiming to treat the whole dog rather than just symptoms. Dog owners are increasingly turning to holistic treatments like acupuncture, herbal supplements, and massages to extend their pets’ lives. This trend highlights a growing commitment to canine longevity and the deep bond between dogs and their owners.
Florida Rescue Demands Dog Back After Facility Neglects 6 Dogs.
A Florida-based rescue, Rags to Riches, is fighting to regain a dog named Howler after learning of severe neglect at Coastal Dreams Rescue in Maine. The facility was found with 6 deceased dogs and 27 others in poor conditions. Despite initial good reports, red flags emerged, leading to an investigation on July 30th. Authorities discovered the grim situation and are now holding the surviving dogs in shelters. Rags to Riches is pursuing legal action to secure Howler’s return.
33 Pets Rescued by San Diego Humane Society.
The San Diego Humane Society rescued 30 dogs, 1 cat, and 2 chickens from a San Ysidro home inundated with floodwaters due to a plumbing issue. The animals were transported to the Society's campuses and emergency vet hospitals. With record numbers of dogs in care and an ongoing infectious disease outbreak, the Society is urging the public to adopt, foster, or help reunite stray pets to ease overcrowding at their shelters.

$4 Million Raised to Transform Lives of Special Needs Dogs!
A dedicated nonprofit has just raised an impressive $4 million to revolutionize care for dogs with special needs. This substantial boost will fund life-changing treatments, surgeries, and therapies for pups with conditions like paralysis and genetic disorders. Study Shows Dogs Know Words on Buttons.
A new study from UC San Diego reveals that dogs trained with soundboard buttons actually grasp specific words. Researchers found that dogs could respond accurately to words like “play” and “outside,” whether the buttons were pressed by their owners or someone else. This research, part of a major longitudinal project, confirms that dogs are processing the words themselves, not just reacting to body language or cues. This breakthrough enhances our understanding of canine cognition and communication.
Protests Erupt in Turkey Over Stray Dog Law.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Istanbul to oppose a new law that mandates the removal of stray dogs from Turkey's streets. Animal rights activists fear the legislation could lead to widespread euthanasia and inadequate care in overcrowded shelters. The government claims the law addresses safety concerns, but critics argue it threatens the well-being of millions of stray dogs and are calling for its immediate repeal.

A 9-year-old Yorkie named Maddie miraculously survived a shark attack after falling off a boat in St. Augustine, Florida. The shark, likely a bull or lemon shark, inflicted severe injuries, including a broken pelvis and deep puncture wounds. Despite the trauma, Maddie survived and is now recovering at home. Her owners cautioned others about the dangers of swimming in Florida’s waterways, where shark encounters are becoming more common.
