Study Reveals Canine Lifespan Secrets.
New research from the Dogs Trust and Liverpool John Moores University examines canine lifespan using data from over half a million UK dogs. The study finds that smaller breeds, like the Lancashire Heeler, tend to live longer, while flat-faced breeds, such as French Bulldogs, face a 40% increased risk of shorter lifespans. These findings not only inform current breeding practices but also offer valuable guidance for shaping the future of canine health and well-being.

Lawsuit Exposes Deceptive Practices in Pet Food Industry.
A recent lawsuit filed in Kansas has shaken up the pet food industry, aimed at big players like Hill's Pet Nutrition and Morris Animal Foundation, along with veterinarians like Dr. Josh Stern and Dr. Lisa Freeman, of conspiring to falsely link certain dog foods to an increased risk of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy). This legal action suggests a deliberate effort to mislead dog owners and tarnish the reputation of smaller pet food brands. This recent development raises further questions about the integrity of information provided to pet owners and the practices within the industry.

Research Finds Furry Friends Encourage Active Kids
A recent study suggests that having a dog can significantly increase daily activity levels in children, particularly girls. Researchers followed 600 children over three years, tracking their physical activity and monitoring family dog ownership. Results revealed that girls with dogs engaged in 52 minutes more light intensity physical activity daily , while boys' activity levels showed less significant changes. Interestingly, the study also noted a decrease in activity levels for girls who lost their family dog.
Viva Raw Issues Voluntary Recall.
Viva Raw pet food has issued a voluntary recall for one lot of their Duck recipes (Batch/Lot Number: 40390) due to Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This decision was made after FDA testing found positive samples obtained by a customer after their dog, Hera, unfortunately passed away after consuming the affected food. It's important to note that this incident occurred among 1500+ customers who received the product and no other incidents have been reported. While recalls arenโt uncommon and correlation doesn't equal causation, Hera's story represents the importance of transparency in pet food manufacturing. For more information from both sides, visit @hera_her_story on Instagram and Viva Raw's website.

Canine Cancer Vaccine Progresses in Trial.
In the Vaccination Against Canine Cancer Study (VACCS trial), a revolutionary vaccine is demonstrating promise in reducing cancer risk in dogs. Developed by Dr. Stephen A. Johnston and his team, the vaccine aims to bolster the immune response against specific cancer proteins, offering potential cancer prevention for healthy dogs. Despite encouraging results, there's concern over potential side effects, which warrant further investigation. However, if successful, this vaccine could transform cancer prevention in dogs and pave the way for similar breakthroughs in human medicine. Yet, before widespread adoption, additional research and USDA approval are imperative.

Florida's Bill Targets 'Dangerous Dogs'
Florida's proposed "Pam Rock Act" seeks to address the issue of dangerous dogs by imposing stringent measures on their owners, including registration and acquiring $100,000 liability insurance. For dogs labeled "dangerous," confinement rules become stricter, and in severe instances, euthanasia may be enforced. While the bill seeks to enhance public safety, its implications on the well-being of these dogs evoke a sense of concern and compassion.

California Bill Aims to Limit Police Dog Use.
In California, a pivotal discussion is unfolding with Assembly Bill 742, targeting police K-9 practices . Introduced by Assemblymember Corey Jackson, the bill aims to limit K-9 deployment, prioritizing safety for both civilians and canines. Advocates stress its potential to curb unnecessary harm, especially in communities disproportionately affected by K-9 incidents. Despite debates, research suggests that such measures could enhance safety without compromising effectiveness.
