FDA Considers Controversial Freeze-Dried Pet Food Rule.
Pet owners and advocates express concerns over the FDA's potential requirement for irradiating freeze-dried pet foods , citing health risks associated with irradiation byproducts. Previous incidents, such as the 2008 case of Champion Pet Food in Australia, where cats suffered health issues after consuming irradiated food, raise alarms about the safety of this process. Critics emphasize the potential link between irradiation and neurologic damage in pets. This proposed FDA decision is seen as driven by the fear of pathogens, potentially neglecting the broader impact on pet food ingredients. Pet owners are encouraged to voice their opposition to the FDA's proposal via email (AskCVM@fda.hhs.gov) and social media (#FDAanimalhealth).
Heroic Rescue Dog Axel Saves Teen Owner from Stroke.
A rescue dog named Axel is being hailed as a hero for alerting his family when his teenage owner suffered a severe stroke. The family, residing in The Woodlands, Texas, expressed gratitude for their one-year-old border collie, crediting him with saving the teen's life. Axel woke the family up around 5:45 a.m., exhibiting unusual behavior and refusing to follow them outside. When the family investigated, they discovered the 17-year-old owner, Gabriel Silva, in distress. Silva's prompt medical attention contributed to his accelerated recovery, with Axel receiving well-deserved treats for his lifesaving actions. The family considers Axel a purposeful and integral part of their lives.

General Mills Enters Into Pet Supplements
General Mills, a major food industry player with ownership of various pet food brands, has recently acquired Fera Pets, Inc., marking its entry into the pet supplement sector. Fera Pets, known for vet-created supplements blending Eastern and Western medicine, raises concerns about potential compromises in ingredient quality and processing standards. The acquisition follows the industry trend of humanization in pet care, but it remains uncertain whether General Mills' involvement will prioritize pet wellness over profit. The move underlines the broader industry shift toward more holistic approaches in pet wellness.

First Canine Rabies Case Sparks Concern in Michigan.
A stray dog found in Detroit has tested positive for rabies, marking the first canine rabies case in memory for Oakland County, Michigan. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services alerted Oakland County Animal Control after a resident found and housed the dog, which later displayed neurological symptoms. The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital, where it was euthanized, and subsequent lab tests confirmed rabies. While there's no indication of the dog biting the resident, the individual was exposed to its saliva. Health officials emphasize the importance of pet vaccination, offering free rabies vaccines for dogs in Oakland County, and advise residents to avoid unfamiliar animals displaying unusual behavior.

Remarkably, Moore's loyal Jack Russell terrier, Finny, survived for over two months beside his owner's body. Despite extensive search efforts, it wasn't until a hunter stumbled upon Moore's remains on October 30, more than two miles from the summit, that the heartbreaking discovery was made. Finny's survival in the wilderness, showcasing unwavering loyalty, garnered widespread condolences and admiration on social media. While investigators are still uncertain about Moore's cause of death, Finny has been reunited with his family, providing them some closure.

Portland Pups Affected by Unidentified Respiratory Illness.
Portland veterinarians warn of a mysterious respiratory disease affecting dogs , its cause unknown. Cases peaked in summer, with severe symptoms leading to hospitalization and death, or milder symptoms persisting for weeks. Symptoms include lethargy, eye and nose discharge, coughing, and labored breathing. The Oregon Department of Agriculture collaborates with vets to gather information. Owners should monitor dogs closely, contact vets at first signs of symptoms. Temporary avoidance of large dog groups is recommended for at-risk dogs.
