$5M Lawsuit after Aflatoxin-Linked Pet Deaths
Sportmix, an Indiana-based pet food maker, is at the center of a $5 million class action lawsuit as dozens of dogs across the nation died after allegedly consuming their products contaminated with aflatoxin from mold. Aflatoxin, a potentially fatal toxin, led to FDA recalls of more than 60 Sportmix products. This toxin, produced by mold, poses risks to liver function, causing symptoms like weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and bleeding. Pet owners, represented in the class action, claim they were unaware of the contamination risks and assert that Midwestern Pet Foods, Sportmix's parent company, concealed the danger. It’s important to look out for pet food sourcing transparently, opting for fresh, grain-minimized diets to reduce aflatoxin risks. To learn more about aflatoxins in dog food, click here.
