New breed competes at Westminster. A Bracco Italiano named Lepshi, co-owned by country music star Tim McGraw, won his breed’s debut at the Westminster Kennel Club. The ancient European breed became eligible to compete at Westminster this year after getting recognized by the AKC. Lepshi was eliminated in the semifinals but made the judge’s initial cuts in his group. AKC recognition can increase everyday recognition, which has some Bracco owners cautioning that would-be owners need to understand that the soulful-looking, amiable dogs require being worked.

Boston trainer charged. Tyler A. Falconer, the owner of a dog training and boarding business, Falco K9, in South Boston is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly abusing three dogs. Falconer is charged with three counts of animal cruelty by a custodian, which are felonies, and three counts of improperly tethering or confining an animal, which are misdemeanors. The Animal Rescue League of Boston, which has police powers in cases involving animal cruelty, obtained the criminal charges on May 4. Falconer was placed on administrative leave from the fire department in Burlington where he works as a firefighter.

Hero dog receives honor. A dog in Japan, Koume, has been recognized as a hero after she alerted people to a man who was having a heart attack by barking incessantly. Koume was awarded an official letter of appreciation by local fire officials for her valiant work at a horse riding club in Wakaba-ku, Chiba City. Koume's barking enabled staff to quickly call an ambulance, and paramedics used an automated external defibrillator on the man just in time. The man has recovered and has since returned to riding at the club.

Kibble manufacturer loses tax breaks. Wellness Pet Company, which manufactures pet food, was granted tax breaks to expand the plant and install odor abatement equipment as locals often complain of the stench. However, after a couple of years, only 3% of the promised real estate investment and 20% of the personal property/equipment investment have been made, according to the Mishawaka Common Council President. The council rescinded the tax abatement because Wellness Pet Company was unable to specify when the investment in the facility would be made.

Arizona approves telemedicine for pets. Arizona has enacted a veterinary telemedicine law that allows pet owners to access virtual care from home. The law amends the Arizona Veterinary Practice Act to remove its prohibition on pet owners seeking veterinary help through a virtual visit. Many pet owners lack the resources to take their pet to a clinic and vet shortages make appointments scarce. Veterinary telemedicine requires the pet owner and veterinarian to consent to virtual care, and if either party decides an in-person visit is required, then that’s what will happen.

Dogs are saving vineyards. The invasive spotted lanternfly is spreading in Virginia, po sing a threat to vineyards, but a border collie named Flint has been trained to locate them. Sally Dickinson, Flint's owner and handler, and a doctoral student at Virginia Tech, has been working on training him for months. Her research team, led by associate professor Erica Feuerbacher, has received a USDA grant to train citizen dogs across the country. Dogs could help slow the spread of lanternflies by identifying egg masses in shipping yards and vineyards, protecting the wine industry. The study aims to recruit dogs with prior scent training and eventually train any dog-owner team interested in detecting invasive insects.

A warning to Michigan pet owners. The Humane Society of Huron Valley in Michigan is warning pet ow ners in the Ann Arbor area about dangerous traps following a wildlife regulation amendment. The amendment permits the trapping and killing of "nuisance" wildlife, such as squirrels, beavers, rabbits, and opossums, without a permit if they cause property damage. The Society has witnessed not only wild animals suffering in traps but also dogs and cats. The CEO of the Humane Society expressed disappointment in the approval of such cruel methods and encouraged pet owners to be vigilant and seek humane wildlife removal services instead.
