SLC dogs at risk. A dog-training area in Salt Lake City, located at the Lee Kay Conservation Area, has been closed indefinitely due to potential contamination that led to the deaths of six dogs. The dogs that became sick were reported to have been training in the area and had exhibited symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. A dog trainer observed the dogs eating a crusty substance near the water, and shortly after, they began experiencing health issues. The cause of the contamination is yet to be confirmed, but tests are being conducted to determine the presence of bacteria. The Utah Division of Water Quality is collaborating to ensure the safety of visitors before reopening the area.

Service dog found. A Phoenix woman and her service dog, Mya, have been reunited after Mya was dognapped at a park six months prior. Mya, who assists Lindsay Deyo with her seizures, went missing in November and was found miles away by an animal search and rescue volunteer in May. Mya appeared to have lost weight, and Deyo planned to take her for a full veterinary checkup. The volunteer who found Mya noticed a dog resembling her being walked by a man and confirmed her identity through a microchip scanner. The man, who had bought Mya a few months earlier, was emotional but requested that Mya be returned to her family.

California woman arrested for animal abuse. A 21-year-old woman named Gabriela Barrera from Irvine, Cali fornia, was arrested and is facing multiple felony charges of animal abuse after several dogs were found with their snouts taped shut on her property. The Irvine Police Department received a tip from a concerned resident about the dogs whimpering on Barrera's patio. When officers arrived, they discovered a dog with masking tape wrapped around its snout and heard whimpering. Barrera confessed to taping the dogs' snouts to prevent them from barking or biting. A search of her home revealed a total of seven dogs, three of which had their snouts taped closed. Barrera was arrested and later released on zero-bail, awaiting felony animal abuse charges.

Whiskey wins over toys company. The Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of Jack Daniel's in a trademark dispute over dog toys that resemble the company's whiskey bottles. The court rejected VIP Products LLC's argument that the toys were protected as free speech under the First Amendment due to their parody nature. Justice Elena Kagan stated that the alleged trademark infringement by VIP fell within the realm of trademark law and did not receive special First Amendment protection. Jack Daniel's claimed a likelihood of confusion and violation of trademark law, while supporters of the ruling, including Nike and Campbell Soup, emphasized the importance of trademark protections for iconic brands.

Mail carrier attacks decreasing. According to the U.S. Postal Service, over 5,300 postal employees were attacked by dogs while delivering mail in 2022, a slight decrease from the previous year. The Postal Service warns that even seemingly well-behaved pets can pose a danger to mail carriers who enter properties to deliver mail. The data was released as part of National Dog Bite Awareness Week, an awareness campaign by the Postal Service. California had the highest number of attacks, followed by Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania. The Postal Service advises pet owners to keep dogs inside, behind a fence, or on a leash when the mail carrier arrives to prevent dangerous encounters.
