Should we not share a bed with our dogs? A new survey of 2,000 pet owners found that 62% share their bed with their cat or dog, with almost a third doing so every night. However, experts warn that letting sleeping dogs share our beds could run the risk of serious infection. Sharing a bed increases the chance of them transferring microbes that sit on a dog's skin, which can cause conditions including mange or even Lyme disease. Microscopic parasitic mites which live within the hair follicles of all dogs can be detrimental to an immunocompromised owner. Is this enough to deter pet owners that love to snuggle?

Unethical breeder shut down. Over 700 dogs were rescued from a breeder in Iowa and sent to shelters and rescues across the US, including Denver. A Friend of Jack Rescue in Denver took in 21 dogs on Thursday night and another 55 on Friday morning. The rescue has set up 75 foster homes and found temporary caregivers through social media. Many of the dogs need medical care, especially dental care, as they had never received any before. The rescue expects the dogs to be ready for adoption in two to four weeks
Kevin Smith mourns his beloved dog. Actor and filmmaker Kevin Smith has shared an Instagram post memorializing the death of his beloved dog, Shecky. The post included photos of Smith and Shecky over the years, as well as an obituary of sorts. Smith called Shecky his "beloved best friend and faithful canine companion" and noted that she had accompanied him on many adventures and countless walks. Smith also reflected on the importance of never taking loved ones for granted, as "no day is promised." He ended his post by saying that while losing his best friend had "wrecked" him, he was "lucky to have known her at all."
Mexico receives gift from Turkey. Mexico has received a German Shepherd puppy as a gesture of gratitude from the Turkish government. After major earthquakes in February Mexico sent search teams to support rescue efforts. The puppy, which is yet to be named, was flown from Turkey to Mexico and will "carry on the legacy" of Proteo, a Mexican rescue dog that died during the search for survivors of the earthquake. Mexico's Ministry of Defence, which trains search and rescue dogs, has asked people to vote for one of three names for the puppy: Proteo II, Arkadas (Turkish for "friend"), or Yardim (Turkish for "help"). Turkey's canine gift shows that "humanitarian aid knows no limits or borders", according to Mexico.

New parvo treatment approved. The US Department of Agriculture has granted conditional approval for the first-ever targeted monoclonal antibody treatment for canine parvovirus. The new treatment can be administered to dogs aged eight weeks or older with canine parvovirus and is the first approved therapeutic solution proven to treat the virus, which has a mortality rate of 91% if not treated with supportive care. Clinical trials demonstrate that the treatment provides a less intensive and more effective solution than supportive care alone. It delivers targeted efficacy with a single intravenous dose, has a strong safety profile in healthy dogs, and can reduce the need for hospitalization. The new treatment is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks, pending individual state approvals.
TSA canine handler under investigation. A viral video recorded by a bystander at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport shows a TSA employee repeatedly jerking a leashed dog, which appeared nervous and uneasy in the busy terminal. Michael Burkey, a former police K-9 trainer, criticized the handler's behavior, stating that it showed a lack of training. TSA officials released a statement, saying the behavior displayed by the handler was unacceptable, and the employee has been removed from his duties pending an investigation.

New arthritis drug available to dogs. The FDA has approved the first monoclonal antibody for dogs called Librela, a shot that dulls pain from the most common form of arthritis in dogs called osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis affects about 25% of dogs during their lifetime and causes limited joint movement, pain, and sometimes bone spurs. Librela controls pain by binding to a protein called canine nerve growth factor (NGF), which is elevated in dogs with osteoarthritis, and inhibits NGF's activity after binding to it. The drug is effective after at least two doses given 28 days apart. Possible side effects include UTIs, skin irritation or infection, weight loss, and vomiting.
