Pets no longer allowed in pet food. An obscure law in Ohio that allowed pet remains to be used in pet food is about to change. An amendment has been added to Senate Bill 164 which will prohibit the sale of deceased companion animals as an ingredient for pet food. This practice is disturbing but it also poses a risk to pets that may eat the food euthanasia drugs will be present. In the past multiple foods have been recalled for the presence of the drug pentobarbital.

New York to end pet store sales. A new law will go into effect in 2024 prohibiting the sale of cats, dogs, and rabbits in pet stores. The goal is to end the “puppy mill to pet store” pipeline and stop supporting unethical breeders. Pet stores are encouraged to rent pet spaces to shelters and rescues looking to find homes for their animals.

Conservation dogs searching for toxins. An alarming number of Blackfoot Nation members have developed cancer or thyroid conditions in recent years while local wildlife also suffers from chronic wasting disease and other ailments. It’s believed that environmental toxins are to blame so scat-sniffing dogs have been brought in to investigate. The dogs from Working Dogs for Conservation are trained to sniff out the droppings of mink and otters. The droppings can be analyzed for the accumulation of toxins and hopefully help prevent further contamination.

Dog ownership contributes to healthy aging. A newly released study further proves what many of us already know, having a dog improves our well-being. The study has followed adults over 65 since 1999 and found that dog owners report being happier and healthier than cat owners and people with no pets. More research is still needed but it does imply that having a dog can improve depression and loneliness in senior citizens.

Canine Brucellosis spreading in Montana. Vets are warning owners to be cautious as multiple cases of brucellosis have been identified in Montan a. Over 100 cases have been diagnosed this year when years past have had less than 10. The disease causes reproductive issues, lameness, and anorexia among other symptoms, and is not curable. It can be transferred from dogs to humans making it risky for Montana rescues and shelters to adopt out dogs at the moment.

Oldest living dog newly crowned. Gino, a mixed breed dog, has become the Guinness World Record holder for the oldest living dog at 22. Adopted in college by Alex Wolf they have adventured together ever since. Only recently slowing down, the diminutive dog has spent his life eating human-grade food and getting plenty of love and affection from his family.
