Real-life Lassie leads authorities to car accident victims. New Hampshire State Police were called after a loose dog was spotted in the road. Tinsley, the heroic hound, exhibited a “follow me” behavior by repeatedly approaching officers then running a short distance away. The pup was followed to a damaged guardrail where her owner and another passenger were found ejected from a rolled over vehicle. Both were seriously injured and experiencing hypothermia but are expected to make a full recovery.
Covid sniffing canines are keeping concerts rolling in 2022. Ohio-based Bio-Detection K9 uses a team of specially trained dogs to make sure we can safely enjoy live music once again. The virus sniffing team can check up to 200 people per hour including local crew, family, band members, and venue staff. Big-name performers like Tool, Metallica, and Eric Church have enlisted these super sniffers because they are “cheaper than testing everybody, and way faster and friendlier.” The team of 12 will sniff a person’s hands, feet, and mask and sit down to alert the presence of the virus.
Dogs of divorce are now considered family members in Spain. Following the lead of France and Portugal, Spain now recognizes pet dogs as sentient beings rather than property in the matter of divorce or breakups. When owners seek legal custody judges will consider the financial stability, with whom the dog will be best cared for, and who has custody of their children. In some cases, pet parents will be granted joint custody if both can prove the ability to provide proper care. Despite its controversial history with bullfighting, Spain is actively pursuing improved animal rights and many in the country view this decision as a step in the right direction.
The American Kennel Club has added more good dogs to its roster. Two more breeds have become eligible to compete for best in show in the US’s largest dog shows. The Russian toy is a petite pup (under 6.5 lbs!) once favored by Russian aristocrats back in the 1700s. They are affectionate, funny, and apparently “have quite the attitude.” The Hungarian mudi (pronounced moody) is a scruffy pup that excels in herding, hunting, and multiple sports! These intelligent, medium size dogs need a job and are perfect partners for active people.
4 legged fire evacuee rescued after almost 5 months. Russ, a pit bull mix, was separated from his owner in Northern California during the August 2021 wildfires and assumed “missing for good.” After being spotted by a skier west of Tahoe, real-life superhero team, and animal trackers, Leona Allen & Elsa Gaule snowshoed up the mountain in 5 feet of snow to find the pup. Surprised and relieved to find him alive, the pair used a sled to bring him down and straight to the vet. Russ has been reunited with his owner and needless to say they are both ecstatic!
Dog-loving Florida woman leaves estate to K9 unit. After experiencing a K9 demonstration Pamela Mobbs became infatuated with her local police dogs. Following her death, she left over $32,000 to the Volusia Sheriff’s Department. This gift is intended to provide bullet and stab-proof body armor to the K9s that she loved so passionately. The unit currently has 18 dogs that work on drug аnd explosive detection, аrrests, аnd seаrch-аnd-rescue missions.
Candy giant scoops up another piece of the pet industry pie. Pet food company Nom Nom, which delivers fresh cooked dog food and treats, has been acquired by consumer manufacturer Mars. Despite the pandemic, the pet industry has boomed, likely due to the adoption of many “pandemic pups”. Over the last 2 years, Mars has taken advantage of this growth and acquired multiple pet-based companies including PrettyLitter Inc. and Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Hong Kong Ltd.
