Black sea dogs of Turkey seek international spotlight. While Turkey does have an incredibly high number of stray dogs, they are home of some very special breeds. A university in the country’s Black Sea region wants to make several breeds raised there as famous as the Kangal or Akbash dogs. A project is underway to define the exact anatomic features and characteristics of those dogs in order to set a standard on the dogs’ descriptions.

Escaped wolf-dog hybrid found dead in North Carolina. A presumed wolf-dog hybrid that escaped its enclosure over the summer in North Carolina has been found dead. The wolf-dog was one of 12 that escaped from the Cedar Grove community in July. Experts confirmed that the animals show traits consistent with wolf-dog cross breeding and they're believed to be part-German shepherd. Nine wolf-dog hybrids were found and are being held at a county facility.

Researchers detect SARS-CoV-2 variant in dogs, cats with suspected myocarditis. A new study reveals that pets can be infected with the alpha variant of SARS-CoV-2, which was first detected in southeast England and is commonly known as the UK variant. This variant rapidly outcompeted pre-existing variants in England due to its increased transmissibility and infectivity. The study describes the first identification of the SARS-CoV-2 alpha variant in domestic pets. Many owners of these pets had developed respiratory symptoms several weeks before their pets became ill and had also tested positive for COVID-19.

New study explains why your dog tilts its head when you speak. A new study published in the journal Animal Cognition on Oct. 26 found that the adorable gesture is a signal that the dog is intently listening. The dogs in the study that were considered “gifted word learner dogs” and recognized more objects tilted their heads in response to their owners naming the objects 43 percent of the time, while the other dogs only did so 2 percent of the time.

Owners offload dogs brought in lockdown by pretending they are strays. People are pretending that dogs they acquired during lockdown are strays so that rescue centers take them in. Figures from March revealed that more than 3.2m pets were bought by UK households during lockdown. Charities have reported a growing trend of people abandoning their pandemic pets as they no longer have as much time for them. Many of these pets were bought online and their true origins and medical issues were not disclosed.

Colorado issues distemper warning after closing animal rescue. Distemper is a highly contagious virus that affects dogs, cats, and wildlife. Rescue director Joann Roof is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. Authorities believe she failed to isolate sick dogs at the rescue and failed to provide them with timely veterinary care. Although this happened in Colorado, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to make sure your dog is tested at their next annual check up.
