Dogs may be better off without us? Humans have, in effect, set up dogs to fail, or at least be totally dependent on their owners. Temperature-controlled environments mean a dog’s coat, designed for specific environmental conditions, is meaningless (other than aesthetically). This is just one of many things our pets have become dependent on us for.
DNA shows the Japanese wolf is the closest relative of the domestic dog. Prior research has shown that modern domestic dogs evolved from a type of gray wolf that does not exist today. The new DNA evidence suggests that it lived in East Asia (not the Middle East or Europe as has been widely suggested) and its wolf line migrated later to Japan. It is still unclear, however, what happened to the line that evolved into dogs.
“Highly suspicious” that the cadaver dogs missed Brian Laundries remains. Brian Laundrie who was a suspect in Gabby Petito’s murder has finally been found. After being missing for 5 weeks, his partial remains were found in the same park cadaver dogs have been in since he’s been missing. Kyle Heyen, who now runs a police-dog training company said “if the body was there at that time X weeks ago, and if it's the same dog and the same quality of dog or the same quality of training, they should have found him." The items had been found submerged under a foot of water at the time of the search. But Heyen said cadaver dogs could still sniff out odors even if they're underwater.
Vietnam owners are crushed after 12 dogs are killed due to Covid. As Covid infections spike, a Vietnamese couple left Long An province on a motorbike along with their pack of pet dogs. They later tested positive for Covid-19. From their hospital beds, they found out 12 of their pets had been killed by authorities over fears the animals could spread the virus. At this time, there is no evidence to support that theory.
Unprecedented plan to use drones to rescue dogs trapped by lava on Spain's La Palma island. Four dogs were stranded for weeks between rivers of red-hot lava streaming from an erupting volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma. Reaching the animals on foot is impossible as this would require walking on scorching lava and helicopters cannot fly in the area because the ash and hot gas from the volcano could damage their rotors. They plan to attempt a test run on Wednesday.
“Zombie” disease is killing a shocking number of deer in New York. Deer get infected after being bitten by small flies known as midges. The rare disease causes intense thirst prior to death which is most likely why the deer are often dead near water, officials say. The disease is called by some a "zombie" deer disease because symptoms in deer may include difficulty standing, drooling, and emitting foam from the mouth or nose. While this disease is most commonly found in hoofed ruminants, it can potentially affect dogs.
