Hero Dog Saves Family from Blaze!

When a fire ripped through an Apartment complex in Baldwinsville, NY, Rocco, a Pitbull mix, proved he’s more than just a good boy—he’s a hero! Rocco's frantic barking woke his owner and other neighbors just in time for them to escape the flames that engulfed their staircase moments later. While 24 units were damaged, the Baldwinsville community has rallied to support displaced residents. Rocco, however, is soaking up well-deserved praise (and maybe some extra treats)!

FDA Steps Up Pet Food Safety Amid H5N1 Avian Flu.

The FDA is now urging pet food makers to strengthen safety plans due to the rising threat of H5N1 avian flu, which has recently affected cats that consumed raw or unpasteurized poultry. With preventive measures now a priority, the agency is ensuring pet food manufacturers take necessary precautions to avoid contamination. Although the virus has not been found in dogs in the U.S., it remains a serious risk to cats. The FDA's action, although late, signals a much-needed step in preventing future outbreaks.

Oregon's Deceptive Avian Flu Claims Spark Outrage.

A public records request revealed the Oregon Department of Agriculture misled the public about a cat contracting H5N1 from raw pet food. Initially, officials claimed the cat was "strictly indoor" and had no environmental exposure, but the records show the cat had outdoor contact, including leash walks and possible waterfowl exposure. This misinformation, amplified by media outlets and veterinary sites, caused widespread panic. Now, pet owners are demanding Oregon correct the misleading press release, acknowledging the potential for environmental exposure instead of blaming raw pet food.

FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3 in Dog Foods

The FDA has banned Red Dye No. 3 in foods, including dog food, due to cancer concerns in animal studies. The ban, effective in 2027, could encourage healthier options in pet food. To ensure your dog is getting the best nutrition, avoid products with unnecessary synthetic additives. Choosing high-quality, minimally processed foods can help protect your dog's long-term health.

Recent Breakthrough in Dog Cancer Treatment.

A groundbreaking cancer treatment at the University of Missouri is showing promise for dogs like Sadie, a Border Collie mix battling lymphoma. The therapy uses CAR T-cells, “trained” to attack cancer, which are directly injected into the lymph nodes. Sadie’s swelling has reduced, and she’s nearly back to normal, thanks to this innovative care. This study not only helps dogs but also advances cancer research for humans, with the ultimate goal of saving more lives across species.

FDA Invites Feedback on CBD for Dogs.

The FDA is collecting input from veterinarians on the safety and benefits of cannabis-derived products like CBD for animals. If your vet has recommended CBD for your dog, encourage them to share their insights during the public comment period, open until April 16, 2025. Veterinarian feedback is crucial to shaping the future of safe and effective CBD use in pets. Let’s support research into products that improve our dogs’ well-being!

UF’s Latest Discovery for Dogs with Hemangiosarcoma.

Researchers at the University of Florida have uncovered a crucial link between a gene mutation and immune system signaling in hemangiosarcoma, a deadly cancer affecting dogs. This discovery could lead to better treatments for dogs, especially those with the mutation, and may also benefit humans with a similar cancer. The study highlights how hemangiosarcoma, which often affects older golden retrievers, spreads by hijacking healthy blood vessels, giving researchers new insight into how to combat this aggressive cancer.
