Purina Pro Plan Raises Concerns Over Pet Well-being.

Pet owners have taken to social media, sharing alarming reports of dogs and cats falling ill, and in some cases, dying, after consuming Purina Pro Plan pet food. As of January 4, 2024, the Facebook group "Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time " has received 197 reports, with 51 animals reported dead. Concerned pet owners have detailed instances of severe diarrhea, dehydration, and even seizures in their pets after feeding them Purina Pro Plan. The FDA is aware of the situation and encourages pet owners to submit reports of illness or adverse events associated with the pet food. Notably, Purina has faced challenges in past FDA investigations, raising calls for transparency. Purina has denied the allegations at this time.

The Dog Aging Project, a landmark study examining aging in 50,000 dogs, is at risk of losing funding from the National Institute on Aging (NIA). With a budget of $7 million annually, the project explores cognitive and physical aging aspects and has been conducting a clinical trial on a longevity drug. The study, initiated in 2014 and intensified in 2018 with a nearly $29 million NIA grant, offers unique insights into aging, utilizing dogs as models for human health. Despite its potential to offer valuable insights into human aging, the project's grant renewal application received marginal scores, threatening its $7 million annual budget.

U.S. Coast Guard's Heroic New Year's Dog Rescue.

A dramatic rescue unfolded as the U.S. Coast Guard saved Leo, a golden retriever, who had fallen off a cliff in Oregon's Ecola State Park on New Year's Day . The Coast Guard's aircrew conducted a successful operation, deploying a rescue swimmer to hoist the stranded pet into a basket and reunite it with its owners.
