Beloved Roman pet discovered. Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a tiny Roman dog , standing at 20cm tall, at Wittenham Clumps in Oxfordshire, UK. The discovery was made at a villa site believed to have been owned by a wealthy Roman family, suggesting the dog was likely a cherished pet rather than a hunting animal due to its small size and bowed legs. The remains will be displayed alongside other findings, such as a brooch and copper bracelet, during the Clumps Go Ancient festival at Earth Trust's headquarters in August.

Dozens of dogs saved from “rescue”. The Butler County Sheriff's Office reported that 90 dogs were re scued from the Helping Hands For Furry Paws facility, while around 30 were found dead. The rescued dogs, including puppies and adults, were kept in multiple buildings across two properties. Shockingly, deceased dogs were located in non-functional refrigerators and freezers. A garage containing over 25 dogs lacked proper ventilation and reached indoor temperatures of up to 89 degrees. The owner, Ronda Murphy, is facing charges of neglect and cruelty to companion animals. The surviving dogs were taken to the Animal Friends Humane Society for care.

3 die trying to rescue dog. Three individuals from Florida tragically lost their lives in Central Texas while attempting to rescue a dog that had fallen into an underground water reservoir. The group had traveled to Bastrop County for hog hunting and after a dog escaped from their truck and fell into the hole three of them ventured in after it. The cistern emitted toxic hydrogen sulfide gas impairing their ability to float causing them to drown. Despite efforts from diving teams, who declined due to the gas, the authorities eventually pumped out the water and retrieved the bodies and the dog. The incident took place on private property, where the property owner had recently passed away.

Dog abandoned at airport. A woman in Pennsylvania is facing charges for allegedly abandoning her French bulldog in a baby stroller at Pittsb urgh International Airport so she could catch a flight. The woman was denied boarding due to not having a proper crate for her pet. Surveillance footage revealed the incident, leading authorities to identify her. The dog, left with food and water, was temporarily placed with Animal Friends of Pittsburgh by the state dog warden. Charges for animal abandonment are expected to be filed against the owner.

Senior rescue reaches milestone. Chester, an elderly rescue dog given just two weeks to live in 2017, is now set to celebrate his 23rd birthday, thanks to the love and care of his owner, Anna Lopez. After seeing a Facebook post from the Escambia County Animal Shelter about the neglected 17-year-old dog, Lopez knew she had to adopt him. Despite Chester's severe health issues, including dental problems, infections, heartworm, skin allergies, and arthritis, Lopez was determined to give him the best life possible. She researched holistic treatments for his heartworm and successfully nursed him back to health. Chester is now thriving, living happily with his dedicated "full-time dog mom" and her husband, enjoying a life full of love and care.

Disney dog causes lawsuit. A civil lawsuit has been filed against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Orange County Superior Court, alleging negligence in an attack by one of the park's security dogs on an 81-year-old man, Paul Perez, from Las Vegas. Perez claims the dog bit his stomach, resulting in a wound and subsequent physical and emotional distress. The incident occurred in May 2022 at Disneyland's main gates, where Perez allegedly bumped into the dog due to the actions of a security member. The lawsuit seeks restitution for medical treatment costs and damages, including emotional distress, anxiety, and fear triggered by encountering dogs. The case is demanding a jury trial to determine damages.

Bloodhound joins sheriff’s department. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has introduced Albert, its first search and rescue bloodhound, after a year of training. Albert, who joined as a puppy in January 2022, completed his certification and training in March 2023. As a member of the Sheriff's Search and Rescue K-9 Unit, Albert's role is to locate missing and at-risk individuals. His handler, Pam Medhurst, noted the hope he brings to families searching for loved ones. Albert was donated to the department by the Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association and is named in memory of Sgt. Don Albert Parker. The Sheriff's Search and Rescue team operates as an all-volunteer unit, responding to various emergencies.
