Exposure to pets may prevent food allergies. A recent study in Japan is reinforcing the b elief that pet ownership positively impacts health. 65,000 families were monitored and it was found that exposure to cats or dogs during pregnancy or the first few months of life decreased the odds of food allergies by 14%. It also appears to decrease the chances of asthma and other respiratory problems. More research is needed to confirm but it looks like our pets are good for us!

Alcoholic dog in recovery. After her owner suddenly died, Coco and his brother were left unattended with several open alcohol containers. It’s unsure how long they were alone but they consumed the alcohol and developed a dependency on it. After being rescued both dogs experienced alcohol withdrawal and sadly his brother passed. Coco has been undergoing treatment and resting and he is now ready to be adopted.

World’s shortest living dog named. Meet Pearl, a new wo rld record holder! The tiny chihuahua measures at only 3.59 inches tall and is about the length of a dollar bill! Despite being shorter than a popsicle stick she is feisty, playful, and not afraid to speak up. She loves salmon, dressing up, and being the center of attention.

Phoenix woman still searching for her service dog. On Nov. 9 Mya the seizure-alert dog was taken from her owner, Lindsat Deyo. The duo was visiting their apartment dog park when Deyo turned her back for a moment. Neighbors were able to describe the dognapper and a police report was filed. Deyo is still struggling without Mya and she has offered a $1500 reward for her safe return.

FDA approves generic vomiting medications. 16 years after brand name Cerenia was approved, the generic version is now going to be available to dog owners. Maropitant citrate tablets are used to strop acute vomiting or vomiting from motion sickness. It is determined that there are no inactive ingredients that may affect bioavailability. However, it is recommended that you avoid contact with the skin or eyes to prevent an allergic reaction.

Vets concerned about influx of parvo cases. The D.C. area is seeing an increase in parvo cases especially in puppies. While any dog is susceptible puppies under 4 months often get it the worst. The disease is highly contagious so if you come into contact with a dog exhibiting symptoms be sure to thoroughly wash your hands and change your clothes before interacting with another dog. Symptoms include lethargy, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, and bloody stool.

NYPD to use robot dogs. New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently announced they will be adding robot dogs to their police force. “Spot” will be used in life-threatening situations including counterterrorism incidents and hostage negotiations. Despite public outcry 2 years ago when the NYPD first announced its intent to use robot dogs, they have moved forward with its contract with Boston Dynamic. Detractors fear these dogs will be weaponized against civilians and increase the militarization of the police force.
