Santa Clara Dog Park Shut Down After Multiple Dogs Get Sick
In Santa Clara, California, at least five dogs have reportedly suffered seizures – and one tragically died – after visiting Nuevo Dog Park. One pup needed emergency care and now has liver damage; another passed away the same day after two seizures. After mounting concerns and a warning sign posted near the park, the city temporarily closed it and launched an environmental investigation. Officials say no pesticides are used and the park is cleaned with pet-safe products, but until test results are in, the park will stay closed. Local pet parents should steer clear for now.

California Dogs Ride the Waves in Style!
It was paws to the boards last weekend at the World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica, California, where dogs of all sizes competed for medals and major bragging rights. From solo runs to tandem rides, pups like Charlie the Lab and Iza the Frenchie showed off their wave-riding skills and some serious balance . Judges scored them on time, tricks, and teamwork. The event is a reminder that dogs really can do anything!
Giant Schnauzer Rescued After 200m Sea Swim Scare
Bertie, a 5-year-old Giant Schnauzer, gave beachgoers in Pembrokeshire, Wales a scare after swimming more than 200 meters (656 feet) into the open sea. He had his sights set on a distant headland and wasn’t turning back. Lifeguard Elen Hill paddled out on a rescue board but couldn’t lift Bertie due to his size. With help from a nearby windsurfer, she held his collar and guided him back to shore safely. His owners feared the worst, but thanks to Elen’s quick action, Bertie is back on land and back in blankets.
Colorado Water Rescue Ends in Heartbreak for Paddleboarder and Dog
A tragic windstorm at Eleven Mile State Park in Colorado swept a paddleboarder and their dog into Eleven Mile Reservoir, where both were later found dead after an 11-hour search. While others caught in the storm were rescued or swam to safety wearing life jackets, the paddleboarder who wasn’t wearing one—and their dog—couldn’t be saved. This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder to keep safety top of mind when enjoying water activities with our pups, including always using life jackets.
German Shepherd Reunited with Family After 5 Years
Bella, a German shepherd who fell into a canal in Fort Lauderdale, was rescued by firefighters—and thanks to her microchip, reunited with her original family after five years apart. The family had to give Bella away in 2018 after a house fire uprooted their lives, and they lost track of her after she was passed to a friend. A call from police brought tears of joy when they learned Bella was safe, just days after one daughter dreamed of her return. Now Bella’s headed home to Central Florida for all the love she’s been missing.

Toxic Well Water May Hurt Dogs Before Humans
Dogs drinking from private wells could be early warning signs of toxic exposure, according to a new Virginia Tech study. Researchers found that 64% of sampled wells had excessive levels of heavy metals like lead and arsenic—contaminants that can harm dogs before affecting their humans. Since private wells aren’t federally regulated, many owners don’t realize there’s a risk until their dog gets sick. The study showed that dogs drinking untreated or poorly treated well water were more likely to have health problems. Experts say testing and filtering well water protects both pets and people.
Ex-NFL Player Convicted in Largest Federal Dog Fighting Case
Former NFL running back Leshon Johnson was convicted on six felony counts tied to a massive dog fighting operation that led to the largest federal seizure of dogs from a single person—190 in total. The dogs, bred and trafficked for fighting at “Mal Kant Kennels,” were rescued from brutal conditions. Johnson, who had a prior dog fighting conviction, now faces serious prison time and hefty fines. Officials called the case a major step in holding perpetrators of animal cruelty accountable and a rescue mission for the dogs who endured it.
