Dog Involved in Suspected Bear Attack in Florida
Tragic news out of Jerome, FL — a dog and his 89-year-old owner were both found dead after what officials are calling a “bear encounter” near Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area . The dog was found first, leading to the discovery of the man’s body about 100 yards away. It’s unclear if one or multiple bears were involved, and officials have since trapped and euthanized three for DNA testing. Locals are being warned to avoid the area and keep pets close.
Big Dog, Tiny Dog, Giant Friendship!
Reginald the Great Dane (3’3”) and Pearl the Chihuahua (3.59”) — the tallest and tiniest dogs in the world — had an adorable playdate in Idaho. Despite the size gap, the two sniffed, scampered, and bonded like old friends. Pearl picked her outfit (diva behavior), and Reggie made sure not to step on her. This unexpected duo proves that friendship knows no bounds… or bones.
Firehouse Hero Pup ‘Riggs’ Remembered
Riggs, a beloved yellow Lab from Midlothian Fire Station One, went missing on May 2nd. After days of searching and community support, the 3-year-old firehouse dog was sadly found after being hit by a car. Riggs wasn’t just a mascot — he was family, helping firefighters decompress after tough calls with tail wags and unconditional love. The department thanked the community for their support, saying, “We will miss him deeply.”

Study Reveals What Makes Farm Dogs Tick.
A new study published in Science Advances uncovers the genetic roots of herding behavior in dogs. Researchers found that specific genes linked to social communication and movement control are more common in herding breeds like Border Collies. These traits help explain their natural ability to manage livestock and respond to human cues. The study shows how selective breeding has shaped not just how dogs look—but how they think and work too.

Sound Quality Impacts Dogs’ Ability to Understand Words.
New research shows that dogs respond best to clear, direct human speech—and struggle the most with AIC buttons, which distort sound, especially in ranges important for dogs. The study tested dogs using speakers, buttons, and live speech, and found AIC buttons delivered the poorest results. Even highly trained “Gifted Word Learner” dogs had trouble recognizing words through buttons. This suggests that sound quality matters a lot when we’re trying to teach or communicate with our dogs. So if you’re using buttons at home, just know: your voice might still be their favorite tool!
Puppy Rue Now Thriving in Foster Care
A man in Long Beach has been sentenced to 3 years in prison after pleading no contest to felony animal cruelty following a viral video of him mishandling his puppy. The footage, captured by a neighbor’s security camera, sparked online outrage and helped lead to his arrest. Thanks to community members who recognized and reported him, authorities were able to act quickly. The puppy, now named Rue, is recovering well and thriving in foster care. Long Beach Animal Care says she’s playful, smart, and adjusting beautifully to her new life!

Study Highlights the Environmental Impact of Pet Dogs.
Curtin University’s new study reveals that while dogs are beloved companions, their environmental impact is often overlooked. From disturbing wildlife to contributing to pollution, dogs affect ecosystems and climate. The study calls for more sustainable pet ownership, urging dog lovers to consider their pets’ environmental paw-prints. Because while we love our dogs, we’ve got to keep the planet in mind too!
