Genes May Influence Labrador Obesity Risk.

A new study from the University of Cambridge reveals that Labradors with a specific gene variant (DENND1B) may have 8% more body fat than those without it. These dogs are more likely to beg for food and can easily gain weight without proper diet management. While genetic testing isn’t necessary, being aware of your dog’s food drive can help you better regulate their diet.

Trooper’s Law Advances in Florida Senate.

Trooper’s Law, inspired by the Bull Terrier abandoned during Hurricane Milton, has passed its second committee stop in Florida. The bill would make abandoning a restrained dog during a natural disaster a third-degree felony, with penalties of up to five years in prison. Trooper, found tied to a pole in distress by Florida Highway Patrol, was rescued and later adopted into a new home in December 2024, where he was welcomed by a canine sister named Dallas. The law aims to ensure that no dog suffers the same fate as Trooper. If passed, it will take effect on October 1.

FDA Certifies Anti-Aging Pill for Dogs.

Loyal, a biotech startup focused on developing pharmaceutical drugs for dogs, has announced that its anti-aging pill has been certified by the FDA for its “reasonable expectation of efficacy.” This brings the pill one step closer to being available for dogs 10 years and older. Tyrion, a 12-year-old Australian Shepherd has been a good boy participating in a study for the antiaging pill. The pill aims to improve metabolic health in aging dogs and could potentially extend their healthy lifespan by at least a year. While it still needs FDA approval for safety and manufacturing, the research could pave the way for insights into human longevity as well.

Turkey's Controversial Law Targets Stray Dogs.

Following the tragic death of a young girl, Turkey’s government is moving forward with a law to remove stray dogs from the streets, which has raised serious concerns among animal welfare advocates. While the law includes measures like sterilization and adoption, it also allows for the euthanasia of dogs deemed dangerous or suffering. Many fear this will lead to unnecessary harm and overcrowded shelters. It's vital we find compassionate solutions that balance public safety with the humane treatment of animals, ensuring that all dogs receive the care and respect they deserve.
